THE INFLUENCE OF GHIBLI ON VIDEO GAMES

I liked anime when I was a child but only know about Ghibli's anime recently. Thanks for Netflix. Ghibli Studio's very well-known for the fans of Japanese animes with their very own watercolor-style graphics. Each movie is a distinctive artwork with gentle and natural storytelling. They don't need countless words but still transfer their profound messages about life via flexible brushes and bright tones.

The topics in Ghibli movies are a variety. They suit a wide range of audiences of different ages. Their artworks stand out from other animes through their various subject, from social issues, politics, war, climate change to the romantic or struggle of the main character's introspection. Those subjects are well-presented by the gentle and bright view angle. I felt peaceful while enjoying those animes, and my emotion is so different from other shonen manga, anime, or tv show dramas.

Ghibli's art style also influences other creative works, notable in the video game. The most aspect that got so much affects from Ghibli style is visual. We can recognize this style easily by the bright tone and very detailed and dreamy background, environment, or atmosphere and through the watercolor effect. Many creative game designers and developers don't miss any chances to learn and apply this style to their games. Those studies help create an unforgettable visual experience for the players and touch their emotions, for example, Nino Kuni 1 and 2, Zelda: Breath of Wild. Besides the visual of the environment, we can feel the Ghibli influences on the character costumes, simple design with color blocks. It creates a contrast between the front elements and the background and highlights the character. These factors immerse the player experience while exploring the game world with a very relaxing feeling.

The story of Ghibli animes is also particular, and it flows naturally and is unexpected. This way of storytelling surprises the audience with spontaneous details but is very logical and flexible. The story leads the audience through unexpecting things and properly reveals the hidden message in a gentle manner. This characteristic of Ghibli is suitable for many RPG open-world games such as Zelda: Breath of Wild. In this game, the player can learn more about the game world and its history via the memory of princess Zelda by exploring many beautiful locations. I felt excited whenever I found something new about the Hyrule world.

The last thing that I love in Ghibli movies is its unique music. The perfect combination of visual and music boost the anime mood to the sky. They raise the emotion of the audience gently. The sounds and music playing in the right moment create unforgettable immersion. I found similar things in Zelda: BoW and Child of Light of Ubisoft. Every time, I ride a horse go through the valley when the sunset appears, the music and environment sound make me feel alive.

Personally, I wish I could craft an amazing video game like the above titles. Those games full of art and emotion will raise the human spirit in the dark world and help them pass by their sorrow. This is the reason, I write down things I learn from Ghibli animes, and hope I can apply them someday.
